Joining the Vermont State Guard, First Battalion


The Vermont State Guard is made up of two groups:


1. CADRE - assigned to positions for immediate response capability,
2. EMERGENCY - assigned to positions needed in an emergency call up.

Criteria for Initial Appointment

1. Age: Minimum age, 17 years, Maximum age 70.
2. USA Citizenship.
3. Physical: Candidate and Commander must certify fitness to perform assignment.

Restrictions Applying to Membership Eligibility

1. Convicted felons.
2. Persons adjudged a youthful offender.
3. Persons on parole or probation.
4. Individuals with a Re-4 enlistment code on their DD Form 214.
5. Persons with prior service whose discharge was other than honorable.
6. Persons adjudged a security risk.
7. Conscientious objectors.
8. Active members of any component of the U.S. Armed Forces.
9. Individuals convicted of offenses of morale turpitude.
10. Individuals with significant medical disqualification (i.e. Diabetes, epilepsy, etc.)
11. Individuals receiving VA medical disability annuity of more than 50%.
12. Persons required to register for Selective Service but have failed to do so.
13. Persons convicted as a drug user/supplier offense.

 


Appointment Grade (Prior Service Appointments)

1. Highest previous rank held in the Federal Service of the Active Armed Forces/Federal Reserve Components.

2. Prior Service applicants may be appointed to a higher grade not to exceed the VSG authorized position based on education and special qualifications and or experience.


Appointment Grade (Non-Prior Service Appointments)

1. Non-Prior service applicants will be forwarded thru VSG Command channels to be processed by the Personnel Management Council subject to approval/disapproval of the Commanding General. Substantiating documents are required to accompany the request.

2. Non-Prior service applicants with an accredited college level baccalaureate degree and assigned to a position within their civilian career field may be considered qualified and appointed in the VSG. Substantiating documents are required to accompany the request.

3. Non-Prior service applicants with special skills may be appointed in the VSG. Substantiating documents are required to accompany the request.

4. Professional Non Prior service personnel applying for a specialized branch (Doctor/Lawyer/Chaplain) may be appointed in the VSG not to exceed the authorized grade for that position.
